Leadership

Over the years, very few people have impressed me in terms of leadership and that is what it is all about!  what you do, is central to you, but I bet it was inspired by someone – that someone is the person who most likely or not, inspired you to be what you are today.

Now before you all go crazy and tell me that you have all these people who ‘shaped’ where you are today…I bet you that you can narrow it down to a few people. Identify these people and more importantly, identify their traits!

How then do we become leaders?

Simple

Lead!!!

What I mean here is that rather than procrastinate, rather than indecision and rather than no decision…simply make one!  Your boss may fire you, but you as a person will have learned the most important step – a decision is better than no decision! Eventually, you will learn how to make the right decision – it takes time, but start now!

Ballistic Striking

I am very pleased to say that our latest martial arts DVD’s by Val Riazanov are selling like crazy and on top of that, we have possibly the World’s greatest martial arts magazine, Black Belt, featuring  and interview with Val towards the end of this year.

In the DVD’s, we cover advanced Ballistic Striking, grappling and dealing with knives and guns.  People always ask me what is the difference between Russian martial arts and other Eastern styles and I simply tell them that Russian arts are extremely simple to learn devastatingly effective.  Now I know a lot of you martial artists out there will always say that some of the video clips out there on Russian arts look fake and to be honest, that was my initial reaction until I met Val and then subsequently traveled to Moscow to learn more.

In Moscow, I met Val’s teacher, Mikhail Ryabko and a host of other extremely talented martial artists and I can assure you that there is nothing fake about any of them.  I have practiced martial arts for 28 years and the Russian style for the last 7 and what amazed me was not only how simple it is to learn, but how quickly you learn the real ‘secrets’ of the art, without having to worship some ‘master’, who remains out of reach to the ordinary student.  What you also have to realize is that many of the people I met in Russia were and still are active Special Forces members and what is good enough for them is certainly good enough for me!

We Live and Learn (Part 2)

It pains me even more to write about my most expensive musical download, but I was reminded about a little overlooked ‘fact’!  We were on vacation in Aruba, with my friend and business right hand lady Nadene and her family.  During my ‘must have now’ musical moment, she offered me to uses her laptop saying that I might as well download the album and whatever else as the daily Internet charge was $15.  “Why would I pay $15 for a song”?  Two days ago I received the bill 0f $222!

~Neil

We Live and Learn

I am officially the Muppet of the week, month or it could be the decade!  I should have known – I am in technology, telecommunications to be precise, I know about downloading, bandwidth and network roaming, I am an entrepreneur, who wants things ‘NOW’ and tomorrow, I will want something different.  I am musical, I love music and when I hear a song that I like, thanks to the Internet, I can get it.  I have an I-phone, I love I tunes and I was on vacation!

That’s why I ended up paying $222 for a download! One song!

Beautiful!!!

For the Network Operator that is!!!

I live, but the learning part…

Absolute Madness

So we fail miserably in the World Cup and the manager or coach, whatever you want to call him still has his job!  This is England and no disrespect to Mr Capello, but we need an English coach and it’s not that we don’t have the talent.  Although I have criticized the players for their attitude, the buck stops with the coach and I cannot see any reason why he should still be there.  There has always been controversy and politics in selecting the England coach and many good managers have been sidestepped over the years and for me, why we never had the late Brian Clough, one of the most talented coaches in the history of English football, remains a mystery.

I have an idea – let’s take a vote and I mean a Natinal vote, after all, it is the fans who provide the income for the players wages, managers salaries etc, so let’s create regional voting centers and work our way up to a National decision. I am totally serious about this as appointing the English coach is probably as important as appointing the Prime Minister theses days!  Also, what about the players themselves?  Can they not have some kind of say?

There is too much power in the hands of bureaucrats everywhere and the arrogance of the FA and FIFA is unbelievable.  I have already talked about the lack of use of technology in the World Cup and the arrogant head of FIFA, has now said he will”look into” the use of technology.  How very kind of him!  Does he not realize that without the fans, there is no FIFA and to all of those England fans who saved long and hard to travel to South Africa and watch Frank Lampard put the ball about two feet behind the line only to have the goal disallowed.  So what should have happened – as the referee and linesmen were so far away, any decision is questionable and to then see the evidence before our eyes on TV means the goal should be IMMEDIATELY awarded and the score adjusted.  SImple as that.

So a message to FIFA and the FA – think what would happen if every fan in European soccer boycotted just one match – how much revenue would be lost?  How much confidence would be lost from the sposors who put millions into the sport? What about TV?  You see, we need to listen to the people who really pay the wages.

I promise this is the last rant about soccer!

~Neil

Out Again

Watched the England game of course and even with the blatant goal that was disallowed, Germany carved us to pieces – simple as that.  Technology is utilized in other high profile sports and you will see that in Rugby, there is the use of the video camera and at Internationals, you will see the referee wait for confirmation of those difficult to see decisions before awarding the result, but I hear that the President of FIFA, has flatly ruled it out in World Cup Soccer, arguably the most prestigious event in sport, using money as part of the excuse.  Now if International Rugby can afford to implement the equipment then I am certain International Soccer can too, but I wonder why they wont…!

Living in the US, I watched the USA versus Ghana yesterday and was very happy to see haw USA and African Soccer is progressing – unfortunately there will be some joint mourning tomorrow for sure.  Anyway, just another four years to wait for the next one and hopefully for a decent England team, that will play with total passion and I think that was the one quality that was missing.  I personally don’t care about the result, if the team played it heart out.  England actually looked dangerous at times and I am certainly no Soccer coach, but if you are 4 – 1 down, there is little difference in losing 5 or even 6 – 1, so go for it, attack at every possible moment and throw the lot at them!!  Maybe that’s why I was put into the School Rugby team!

Hall of Fame

In my recruiting career, which has spanned twenty five years, I have come across, learned from and taught some hugely successful sales people.  I was talking with Nadene Chaplin, my long suffering assistant the other day and she asked me who were the ‘best’ in Dataworkforce.

I gave the subject a lot of thought and decided to name the people that have had an impact in my career in the Staffing Industry and also those who I taught that went on to be successful.  Please bear in mind that this is specific to the Staffing Industry only and I will have to put much more thought into one for the entire Sales Industry.  The people mentioned are mentioned for specific abilities that shine over and above – not just recruiting abilities and it could also be for just one ability, tenacity for example and I am trying to put the list in chronological order.  If anyone reads this and feels that I missed them, please contact me.

Golf, Golf and Golf

I spent half of Father’s day on the golf course, but as I am a father, then that is my prerogative!!  I actually had some intensive lessons with Mr Rick Woodson and I must say that Rick has totally changed the way I hit the ball – at least it comes off the ground and goes at the target!!  Seriously, I have had my fair share of golf instructors and attended many golf schools, but I have seen absolutely no-one hit the ball as solidly and crisply as Rick.  Also , Rick is someone who will actually play golf with you and put his game on display and he will regularly shoot par or under.

I liked Rick’s method so much, I went into business with him as my golf game has improved dramatically.  Golf is one of those sports that will challenge you for life because you are playing a scientific game (you cannot violate the laws of physics and geometry) and there is the ‘emotional’ factor and in golf, the key is to be able to repeat your successes.  Business is the same, as no matter what, emotion will play a part and that puts the brakes on the word ‘repeatable’!

A very enjoyable day however and I must reveal the motivation behind my two hour intensive session that began at 09:00 hours on Father’s day – remember the post about England?  Well I had just lost my second game to Mr Pete Cavanagh, a customer of mine  and it caused the cash that was in my claw to go  firmly to him!  I told Cavanagh aka the ‘caveman’ that it would be the last dosh he would take from me and I was prepared to spend millions if necessary (who said an entrepreneur does not have ego)!  Rick to the rescue, but I did need a sales pitch – “Rick do you know how much I recommend you to the world of golf”?  “Yes I appreciate it” came the reply.  “Then you had better make sure I don’t lose and my game is a representation of you and I have just lost ‘hard earned’”, I said.  “Get yourself down here tomorrow at 09:00, Father’s day or not”, came the swift reply!!. Hehe!!!!!!

To Buy or Not

People only buy goods and services based on the value of those goods and/or services that they perceive at that time. The old adage that people buy people is somewhat true, but many people have bought from people they don't like (me included), because they have fallen in love with the product or service.

My business partner Jack Spirko always tells me that there are only two groups of people you cannot sell to – the ignorant and the poor. I totally agree with him!  In my own sales career, I have spent many an hour trying to educate the ignorant and never succeeded and the 'poor' speaks for itself.

Coming from a door to door sales background (my first sales job), I fully understand rejection – not everybody was happy to hear from me at 8:00pm as they are sitting down watching their favorite TV show and I got many a door slammed in my face, but it was while I was out one Saturday morning and I knocked the door of this house, when a gentleman answered and firmly said "not interested" and before I could counter, he said "I am a sales person myself and remember that the word '"no'" is a by product of success" and then shut the door. How right he was.

Because I understand rejection and the amount of door to door calls I had to make to meet my targets, I am very sympathetic to any sales person that calls me…BUT…they had better have done their homework first!

When someone calls me, they need to very quickly captivate my attention and in doing so they must tell me:

  • Who they are
  • What they do
  • What they can do for me

In addition, they must offer some sort of 'proof' and 'reference' regarding their product or service and all of this must be done in under a minute!!

Now if they have taken the time to research me, then their chances of success will be much higher and I will cover how to research your prospect in another post.

Back to 'perceived value'. Perception is reality and how you present your product obviously influences the perception and now we have to look at psychology and more importantly, relating directly to your prospect. I have seen many sales people fail miserably, simply because they do not understand their prospect from an emotional standpoint – they don't know how to 'read' the person, selling then becomes an uphill battle.

So do your homework and that means research, research and more research. Don't just trawl the internet for facts that anyone can find out, go deeper.  Understand the pain and frustrations that plague your prospect and this also means going much deeper than understanding their job role and key responsibilities. When you finally make contact, you will have a much more compelling story and that is exactly what i am going to cover in the next post – how to tell a story!

Classic UK TV

I have been watching some classic British comedy on You Tube and back in the late sixties and early seventies was a show called On the Buses, not surprisingly about a bus company and in particular, a driver called Stan, conductor, Jack (who collects the fares) and a long suffering, miserable Hitler lookalike, called Inspector Blake or 'Blakey', Dracula or Frankenstein!  It ran on Sunday evenings, I think and was centered around the bus depot and the home of Stan, who lived with his Mother, Sister and Brother in law.

I find myself laughing every time I see it and it is like Fawlty Towers, the more you watch it, the more you laugh.

In the one episode I was watching, Stan turns to Jack and says in the finest Cockney accent that 'Blakey' has finally come out with a sensible comment.

"Blimey, they must have got his head working", says Jack and Stan replies "I did see them tighten the bolts last night". Classic!

I like the finer things in life – food, wine, clothes and haircuts! Now even though I have short hair, I am very particular as to who cuts it.  My latest hairdressing master – Mansour Aalam, is the new master of the crop, producing a graduation taper (no 'block' lines for me), finely blended with a textured top, if I might say so myself.  What is excellent about theses guys is that despite being in business for a short time, they have been shortlisted for a major award – good luck to you all and I am sure that you will do well.

I am also working with these guys – Mansour and Nasar Aalam and Johnny Walker (what a name), helping them with their marketing and some plain, ordinary business advice about the exciting and challenging world of business as experienced in business by Yours Truly.  The salon is called Aalam and I would advise anyone to give them a try.

Have to now have to attend a meeting for my staffing business Dataworkforce and then to a meeting with a golf buggy!

We Live and Learn

I have got to smile!!  I was talking over the usual pre, during and post work beer the other day to some of our senior guys about how Crazy Jack advised some senior executives of one of our companies, about how to maximize the use and opportunities that social media creates and in particular, You Tube and this was in early 2007. Well, poor old Crazy was laughed out of the meeting room and came back to me with the all familiar:

"Why pay someone for advice and then laugh at them" and "why ask me to do a job and make recommendations and then ignore them"

"Don't worry I'll have a word in their shells", I responded.

I walked into the meeting room and asked about the meeting and I was told that we are not children who play at networking, we are professionals in a corporate world, who have serious clients – "are there any non serious clients", I replied! I asked them to at least listen to his recommendations and that I would be in the meeting also, to hear it myself.

So at the follow up meeting we are all sitting around the table and I should have guessed by the smirk on old Crazy's face that something was up. Jack opened with all of the benefits of social networking and how much the industry is in its infancy and we will be light years ahead of the game if we start now.  The response was the predictable '"not professional" etc and then Crazy struck:

He asked the lead executive which companies that they had worked for (the sly fox knew of course) and the list came back with one very large Management Consulting firm in it. "Would you class them as professional and corporate", he asked and "absolutely", with a look of arrogance came back.

"Well, they have eighteen videos on You Tube", said Jack, to a sea of blushing red faces!

Crazy got up and left and I said that I will leave the decision to you, foolishly thinking they would have learned, but of course they did not.

"I wonder where that executive is working today", I asked Crazy only a few hours ago. "Probably sitting in an office learning to upload videos", came the reply.

You see, social networking is here to stay, love it or hate it and I personally love it and it is a very powerful tool.  If only back then, the people concerned would have just listened and tried it, but in the tru style of Crazy and one of the first things he taught me was:

"We have nothing to lose, so let's NOT do it" hehe!

Guinness Tales

I have just finished my routine call with my assistant Nadene, who is still back in the UK and she was telling me about her recent trip to good old Dublin, Ireland.  She and her husband Paul, went away with friends for the weekend and she was telling me about the amount of Guinness that she alone consumed on the Saturday night. Now being a true gentleman, I am not going to reveal the measuring unit, nor the amount of units consumed, but it was not a half measure and the amount rests between 8 and 10!

Reminds me about my Olympic Weightlifting days and the Northern Irish Championships in 1995.  I headed over with my Irish coach on a Friday afternoon to compete on the Saturday morning and as you can guess, we got our pre-competition nutrition program slightly wrong.  Instead of the prescribed carbohydrate loading and an early night, we headed into town and consumed 6 pints of Guinness each, with six Irish Whiskey (note the Irish spelling) chasers!

Not surprisingly the next morning was a little sluggish and after weighing ourselves, my coach, who was also competing realized he was several pounds over the weight limit for his class.  I was several pounds within, so a good old Irish breakfast for me and cereal for the coach!

Amazingly, we both won our respective weight divisions and had to of course, celebrate by beating the previous nights tally of Guinness and Whiskey! So there is definitely something very special with the "black stuff" and don't let anyone tell you any different.

Shortly, I am heading over to Wales where the local brew is "Brains" bitter…now I wonder if that will help!

Healthcare

Living in the US, health care reform is a hot topic!.  I hear all of my American friends shudder when they hear of the looming reforms.  "Hold on" I say, it's not a bad thing, social medicine, just don't ever follow the way we totally screwed it up in the UK.

Thing is, the UK has managed to totally destroy a system that should have been the best in the World and I dont have enough energy to type the words to tell you why, but here is one clue – every person in the UK, that is working, has to pay a tax called National Insurance and this so called 'insurance' is paid TWICE – once by the employee and once by the employer.  Now remember this is a NATIONAL INSURANCE, so you can imagine my frustration, not to mention the frustration of the patients, when you hear of a situation whereby a cancer sufferer is denied treatment, because they live in an area that 'does not have the funding' to give them the drug they need, but get this…another area of the UK does have the funding and the drug, but will not accept the patient!!!!

Now I thought the term 'National'., meant just that and next time anyone is denied treatment, ask for the 'Regional' Insurance plan and watch in amazement when 'they' look at you in disbelief.

 America beware…don't copy our system!

Stack and Wilt

I am a keen golfer and have been trying to learn this game seriously since 2003. Over the years I have attended golf schools, had many lessons, but my handicap seemed not to really go down. That is until, I stumbled across a new swing method called the Stack and Tilt. I am not going to link to it as it is easy to find on Google.

Now this swing theory, without going into detail, dictates that your weight should stay more to the left throughout the swing, the reason being that there are less moving parts and therefore it is easy to hit more consistent shots.

After a few months of scrounging around the Internet and teaching myself, I started to make dramatic improvements in my ball striking, but as is usual in golf, it is a false economy, as you usually meet a roadblock which completely derails you.  I was no exception.

I then got hold of the DVD's and could not wait to receive them and you can imagine my surprise when they arrived, accompanied by a golf training club, which I hadn't ordered and then followed by another one, again, not ordered.  In all seriousness, I was so entrenched in the DVD's that I forgot about the clubs, which were probably sent on trial, but which I am now sure I have paid for.  Still, my loss as I did nothing, but I do hate this type of marketing.

Now here is some advice for Mr Andy Plummer and Mr Mike Bennett, originators of the Stack and Tilt, who are obviously experts regarding the golf swing:

The job of an expert is to make complicated things simple

Whilst I love the idea of the stack and tilt, I feel the delivery of the teaching is too complicated and especially when it comes to the use of terminology – nobody cares about fancy technical terms, rather what do they mean and how do I do it!

The second piece of advice I will offer, is that you have to have a system of follow up, so people can ask the sort of questions that arise from such a production.  If you go to their website, you will see that this is sadly lacking. So after spending the money and then having a load of questions, I then had to trawl through the Internet and You Tube to try to find the answers and I did find some good information, but it was not enough, not complete.

Luckily, I Googled "Stack and Tilt Dallas" and found Mr Rick Woodson.  Rick was actually on a testimonial from a student at his club The Woodbridge Golf Club in Texas and I called him and arranged a lesson.  I was so frustrated at the time that I said to him on the phone as we had not yet met – "can you do me one favor as I am playing tomorrow and struggling, can you give me one tip to get me through the round"?.  Rick gave me about 15 minutes of his time and helped restore some lost confidence. I went for one lesson and he changed my game for life, so much so that I partnered with him to develop his own swing system that he worked on all of his life.  The Impact Method, is Rick's system and I for one can tell you I am playing the best golf of my life and more importantly, enjoying every minute of it!

Old Friends

Recently made contact with one of my earliest Martial Arts instructors way back in the 80's, Stephen Brooks

Stephen, along with my first ever Instructor Kevin Brewerton were instructors under the famous South East Schools of Lau Gar Kung Fu.  In 1985, Stephen left to form his own association, Phoenix Schools of Martial Arts, based in Croydon, Surrey and has never looked back since!I fondly remember Sunday afternoons training with Mr Brooks and the two solid hours of conditioning, bag and pad work, wanting to throw up and then getting kicked and punched all around the gym – thanks Stephen! seriously, they were very productive times and a far cry from some of the 'Arts' I witness today, which bear little resemblance to the purpose.

Stephens lessons were very well organized, productive and most importantly, the environment was safe and that is why many parents would send their kids to Steve, to learn the discipline and hard work that makes the Martial Arts a perfect compliment to any child's education.

Still on the Martial Arts, Mr Val Riazanov is flying over next month when we begin filming the follow up to the extremely successful Ballistic Strikes.  Many of you who have the DVD's are anxious to see what's next and in the next series, we will be filming Ballistic Strikes 2, which will be an in-depth look at the more technical aspects of striking, including pressure points and kicks. Also, we will cover defences against handguns, edged weapons, conditioning for combat amongst other interesting things.

Stay tuned!

Drive, Hunger, etc

I was playing golf yesterday with my new business partner in my latest venture in the field of medical recruiting.  He is a young, very successful doctor, who is totally driven to succeed and we were talking about the qualities needed for success.

'Drive' and 'hunger' are qualities that will go a long way in the path to success – give me an uneducated person with these qualities and the rest can be taught.  Education for me, was a tiresome process of reading books and attending lessons that I was rarely interested in and then regurgitating the facts and during the process, scoring and A, B C or the dreaded D and E, depending on how many facts I could remember.

This is not to say that education is unimportant, it has to be education from the motivation to learn and not the forcing of learning and this is why I probably learned so much after school and college, as my motivation to learn was much higher.

When I am training any sales people and particularly recruiters, I insist that they must have a passion for their industry. This passion will form the basis of their industry learning – what are the 'drivers' of the industry, who are the main players and what are their qualities over their competition.  this 'learning' enables the sales person to form opinions and then to have meaningful discussions with their clients.

Add to the mix with huge levels of drive, hunger and the sales techniques to bring immediate value and you have the formula for success!

Back Again

Back from a series of trips including a visit back 'home' to the good old UK.  I must say I was really surprised how cold it was compared to Dallas, which reached 80 degrees just before my departure and looking at the snow covered UK today, its only got worse.

Crazy Jack and I are working on an exciting new series of online products ranging from martial arts to a complete online recruiters training program.  Having trained literally hundreds of recruiters over the years, many who have gone on to great success with their own companies and others who have taken senior management positions with large global firms, I thought it was about time that I shared my secrets and this online program will cover everything, but most importantly, how to ensure that as a recruiter, you are immediately seen to add value to your clients and candidates.

I am working 'live' with people and explaining how a downturn in the economy can be a huge opportunity and of course, how to handle each and every objection that is thrown at you, before it even occurs.   this is probably my most exciting project yet!!

Negotiate

I have just put the phone down to a friend of mine, who has a business back in the UK.  Like most in his sector, he is suffering due to the economy and also, like most he is heavily dependent on bank finance.

We were talking and he was telling me how revenues have nearly halved over the last 12 months or so and that trading is extremely difficult and he can't see himself lasting another 6 months!

I asked him if he had tried negotiating with the bank and he said that he had, some months ago, but not now as he feared he may push them too hard and they will foreclose.

I told him first, that a hell of a lot has happened over the last few months and second, that he is probably in better financial shape than the bank!  I also told him that he absolutely MUST start negotiating, asking for his payments to be suspended for a period, to get the business back to a positive cash flow and ultimately to profit.

In my business career, I have faced recessions and serious cash flow problems, even in 'boom' periods.  What I have learned most as a entrepreneur, is how to survive.  My idea of survival is to make sure that every creditor is aware of the problem up front and then to devise a plan to pay them back, but the plan must be realistic and achievable for all.

I have been 'bust' in my career before and at that time, my creditors would not negotiate with me and I told them that I was sorry, but I could not meet my payment obligations, their attitude was simple – pay or we bust you, which they did.  This was during the recession of the late 80's/early90's and I think one of the reasons why it occurred, was because I told them of my problems too late and they had effectively lost trust in me.  the next time I had a problem, I addressed it immediately and I worked out a deal with my creditors to pay them back.  At that time, I could have easily 'busted' the business myself and started a new one the next day, but I wanted to honor my obligations to the creditors and not lose the business.

There is always a deal to be worked out to solve any problem in business, but you have to be open and honest with everybody and the plan must work for all the parties involved.  Trust is the most important part of the relationship with financial institutions and trust can and is built and maintained in both good and bad times!

In part two I talked about derivatives being at the heart of the problem and to explain the concept of derivatives fully, would occupy this blog for a year, so you can conduct your own research to understand further.

The real issue with derivatives is that you can literally create money out of thin air and it is lending without 'lending'! Banks are governed by strict rules that dictate to them how much reserves they must hold in relation to the amounts they can lend.  So if the capital ratio is 10, then the bank can lend monies equivalent to 10 times the amount of reserves – if the bank has $100M in reserves, then it can lend up to $1billion.

But, the banks are lending without really lending and this creates the term 'notional lending', which using the analogy of a poker game, the notional sum is the chips and you can keep playing with the chips until of course, it is time to cash in and you have to come up with the 'real money'.

Over the last years, nobody has had to come out with any 'real money' to pay off losses as counter parties have allowed them to roll over debt, but in doing so, charging an interest penalty for compensation.

So why have things now come to a head?

In simple terms, because a package of loans, including the sub-prime loans of the housing industry defaulted into billions, which could not be rolled over, because the counter party was insolvent!

If you look at a traditional mortgage portfolio, you would see lending restricted to a maximum percentage of the asset (house) value, say 80%.  This afforded some protection to the lender, but we are now in an economy of hyper competition – some lenders will go to 90 or even 100% and also greed.

Greed is the whole game and over the last fifty years our society has promoted a lifestyle that is based on consumption – mankind has been indoctrinated to work harder and consume more and when do not physically have the cash to spend, there is always a bank willing to extend a loan and that of course created a credit based society.

Now putting this altogether, we have the creation of a credit based economy, which of course leads to huge amounts of consumer and corporate debt, we have a banking system that has changed into something akin to gambling and finally, the 'straw breaking the camels back' – the recent sub prime crisis!

So what about the future?

Well we could look at the fact that it is the central banks, working with the consumer banks that have created the boom and bust cycles of capitalism and the answer may well be in abolishing the central banking system.  Whatever it is, one thing is for certain, the financial architecture of the world will definitely change.
